The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz was established in 1897. The Photothek is the photographic archive located into the historical building of Palazzo Grifoni/Budini Gattai, which looks on the square Santissima Annuziata.
Conceived as a branch of the library, it stores the Institute’s collection of documentary photographies of artworks and italian architecture, in particular for a time-frame between middle age and modern age.
The collection grews in parallel with the historical and scientific researches of the Institute.
Today the collection counts over than 610.000 photo-documents; some of them are rare pieces from renowned photographers or have been donated by eminent art historians.
