In Cingjing* mountains, there is a place hailed as “Utopia in the Fog" - home of the veterans' descendants. They are groups of minorities from Mainland China’s southwest border; a group of people who seem to have been forgotten with the lapse of time. In 1949, KMT (Kuomintang, 中國國民黨) lost the Chinese Civil War (國共內戰) and was defeated by CPC (Communist Party of China, 中國共產黨). Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) retreated to Taiwan with two million soldiers, government officers, and citizens. Before they came, there were less than six million citizens in Taiwan. Suddenly, the 2 million soldiers, government officers and citizens had to find places to stay and find some ways to survive in this island. The people from Yunnan (雲南) were distributed in Cingjing area. In this ever-changing day and age, they have to strive hard to maintain their dignity and self-respect as well as keep their way of life. The unique culture of this assimilation process gradually rooted in Cingjing, Taiwan.
*Cingjing - situated in Ren-ai Township, Nantou County, Taiwan.

We hope to document their stories through this publication, record exotic culture of these military villages. Additionally, the magazine aims to ease the identity crisis of the descendants. This publication, designed to bring back so much memories for descendants who still stumble in the city, intends to help the descendants contribute to the community.
