Repeating Patterns

Repeating patterns

Repeating patterns was a contemporary arts practice course in my college. We had to create a design using any inspiration or elements we found in our surroundings and screen-print it on a cloth.
Geometrical designs really fascinated me and I decided to work on a hexagonal design.
I started off by making a single hexagon that had different sharp and complementary shapes and lines arranged symmetrically. I added two hexagons aligned adjacent to each other and used the whole as a single block, repeating it throughout my canvas to come to a final pattern. I ended up making two versions of the same design.
कर्म           सुख           मुक्ति
Karm          Sukh          Mukti
Karma     Happiness     Freedom

Final patch on screem
Second design patch on screen
The basic elements of both the designs are same. The first version is a set of geometrical shapes placed across the center circle of each hexagon, while the second version is filled with text in the center. The words Karm, Sukh and Mukti are taken from the Indian language, Hindi. The literal translation to which becomes Karma, Happiness and Freedom. These three components of life are interdependent to each other and work by the mechanism of reciprocity.
