Dancing Snowflakes is an illustration I created with mixed media. I used gouache, oil pastels and Procreate.
I really wanted this to be a piece of joy expression and I wanted myself to have fun while painting it.
First, I came up with three ideas for the sketch.
I realized soon that I wanted to paint a scene with a lot of snowflakes, that also had a feeling of community. So I tried to figure out a dreamy color palette and I went with the horizontal sketch choice at first.
Then, I sketched a bit freely on my sketchbook with traditional materials to study the character design and colors.
I changed my mind and decided to go with the vertical sketch I created. When I think about snow, the picture that immediately comes to my mind is snowflakes falling down from the sky, so I wanted my illustration to reflect this movement.
Next, I went on with the final piece. I painted the background and then I adjusted the lights and tones on Procreate, adding some details with digital brushes.
Afterwards, I painted the characters traditionally and I edited them on Procreate.
And this is a video that sums up the whole process, hope you like it!
