Flower installation on St. Hanshaugen

Flower installation on St. Hanshaugen
Individual project

The mission:
Create an optional installation at St. Hanshaugen in Oslo.

Principal:
School project in Art and Visual Instruments, (a project that was not carried out in practice.)

Digital tools:
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Results:
An installation placed on the water in the pool at the top of St. Hanshaugen. The installation floats on the water in the summer, giving the area colors, while at the same time there is a message behind the location and design of it, which one does not think about unless you stop and take it in on you.

Date:
February 2019
Here are some pictures of the area where the installation will be placed. It is an open and large area, which has a lot of potential, but with the need for some color and energy.
At the beginning of the process, I created some moodboards with inspiration for what the installation could be. Here I used pintrest, and put the pictures together in Indesign.
"I want the installation to have a deeper meaning behind the pretty flowers."

I ended up using flowers for the installation, because it would fit into the description of adding the area colors and a breath of fresh air. At the same time, the flowers could be a symbol of the people who are so important to keep life in the area. I wanted to use the flowers to show the world, and how it is composed of different cultures and societies. I wanted to play on the life of the flowers, and put it together in a controlled way, but give them the opportunity to change and evolve, just as people in a society do.

I made some scale models of the installation. Here I tested how I could put together different colors to illustrate a type of community. It was these types of society/forms of governance that I chose to include in the design of the installation:

Dictatorship, multicultural, segregated, hierarchy, imperialism, democracy
Materials: flowers, polystyrene, oasis
Size: 5*5m
"The installation symbolizes different types of societies that form our world. Hierarchy, democracy, segregated, dictatorship, diversity, and imperialism. These are different societies with great contrasts, which must work together to avoid conflict."

The location on the water can be a symbol of how the world is always changing. Some flowers grow and stand stronger than those that wither.
