“Past and the present” is an accordion fold publication about the monuments in Singapore that have gone through changes throughout the years, and with each change, a different purpose.
The concept for this whole project is to show the differences that the monuments have gone through between the past and the present in a form of an art gallery. This book has two sides, with both sides showing the exact same monuments in different eras. The century 21st shows the journey of the monument and what it is being used for now. It is mostly white in color and uses Sans-serif typefaces to evoke a sharp and clean feel, thus reflecting modernity. While the century 19th shows the history of the place and what it was being used for in the past. It is in pink to show the contrast in the colors between the two centuries. It is also in Serif typeface as it is more commonly used in the past.
Readers can choose to view it as an art gallery by opening up the book as an accordion fold or they can choose to read it like a book. At the end of the century, they can turn the book around to continue reading the next century.
