In 2020, political and social tensions are high. In 1960, at the height of the Cold War, things were similarly strained. With the launch of the first satellite into space (Sputnik), the first successful orbit of live animals, and the first successful probe-landing on Mars the Soviets kicked off a highly tense technology race with the West. Mesmerized by their own achievements, there was a further push from Soviet leaders to compete with Western projects, including a supersonic passenger transport. However the economic reality within the Iron Curtain led to a dichotomy of the heightened expectations of Soviet elite and lacking results.
