Carrier of Memories

Haneen, or Yearning, is an anthology of 39 poems and stories written by Syrian children living in informal tented settlements across Lebanon, interpreted by 47 Lebanese and Syrian artists.

It is a collective work of Lebanese and Syrian artists on the impact of war on childhood. The exhibition took place at Beit Beirut from February 21st till Marc 4th.

The poems and stories were written by Syrian children living in informal tented settlements in Lebanon, interpreted by Lebanese and Syrian artists.

This project is unique because the children were given space to freely express themselves and because the artists were given freedom for their own interpretations, resulting in a rare glimpse into minds, hearts and memories of war that both have in common.

I was extremely happy to be part of Haneen. My artwork is based on "Carrier of Memories" written by Anas Ibrahim.
Translated from Arabic:

Carrier of Memories
Anas Ibrahim

I am the Syrian refugee carrier of memories
And my homeland is far behind the mountains
War raged… we fled
Farewell to my grandparents
With the hope of a reunion
Following us
But…
There was death
And so they died
Two hours apart
I was told
I remembered the plane hovering and shooting
My tiny heart almost stopped beating
We fled death to find multiple forms of death.
Only my school,
my tent,
my hope,
For a new sunrise.
