Cartón, Modular cardboard furniture (Product design thesis Project)
Cartón (spanish for cardboard) is a modular cardboard piece of furniture thought for millenials and their new paradigm on housing and furniture.
The goal was to create a piece of furniture for the millennial generation according to their style of living and inhabiting a space, buying habits and observations on how they view furniture as a thing in their lives.
The many problems and issues that millennials have with furniture and household products relate to the concept of durability. On the investigacion, a recurrent problem was the fact that current furniture manufacturers left out very important things for a millennial buyer, like sustainability, and prioritize completely opposite thing on their products, like a long product lifetime. most millennials have a very unstable and nomadic way of life and have no interest nor means to keep a big and heavy piece of furniture for a very long time or during several house moves.
On the design process, many ideas were proposed to resolve this problem, but one very simple idea fit all the criteria: changing the material to cardboard. this material is both very strong and very eco friendly, and most of the time, is used in a way that can assemble and disassemble very easily, filling perfectly all the main problems found on millenial’s relationship with furniture: sustainability, price and durability
The resulting product is a modular seat that can be rearranged according to the place or occasion. is made 100% out of cardboard and is designed to be the as user friendly as possible on its assembly.
