Generative Art: An Introduction

Academic project developed during the final semester of my BA, for a class on editorial design.

The assignment was to collect texts and images pertaining to a subject of the student's choice, and produce a prototype of a publication, applying what had been learnt since the start of the year.

I chose generative art because of my interest on it and took this project as an opportunity to learn more about it.

As I researched the subject, I realized how incomplete and sometimes inaccurate my notion of generative art was. Therefore, I decided to create a publication that initiated a study on generative art, much like my own experience researching for this project.

The papers were chosen because of their intent to clarify the notion of generative art, explaining the distinction between other art and process forms and try to give clues as to a taxonomy to be used.

Both the pull-out quotes and the images printed on transparencies were the way I found to make the book more appealing and experimental. This allowed me to maintain the integrity of the articles and also strip away some of the formality or heaviness that is sometimes perceived of research papers.
