Colour and Form Exploration: 'PLAY'

Design Domain Part 1, required us to undertake primary and secondary research, drawing and colour analysis which explored the broad theme of ‘PLAY’. Using the term as a theme to trigger further investigation, I collected and sourced objects, explored forms and colours and worked with a variety of materials and processes.
I wanted to delve into the basic concept of 'playing', i.e., to engage oneself in an activity that is recreational in nature; a concept that instantly strikes a chord with people of all ages, from all around the globe alike. My work began with a visit to a stationery cum toy store in the City Centre. My aim was to work with bright colours and explore different textures, finishes and materials which were all aplenty at the said store.
A narrowed down the toy of my choice to a brightly coloured Rubik's cube which would be the primary source of my colour and form inspiration. Geometric, symmetric patterns, bold motifs, were derived from the same.
The images collected and colours drawn from them were converted into forms made by using several different materials primarily sourced from kitchen, hardware, and beauty products sourced from a convenience store nearby instead of conventional textiles.
Using images of the surfaces created, visualisations were made by creating paper patterns draped over maquettes.
