Revolution and Rebellion

The project was to make a gig poster in Illustrator - for an imagined band - that accurately and creatively captures the mood and genre of that band's music. While my creative process was a bit chaotic and unorganized, I eventually got there in the end.

I am really into indie pop music, so that's the original route that I wanted to go. So I started out by sketching some things that give me the same indie-pop feelings I get when I listen to that music.
While sketching, I was able to get enough concrete ideas to start on my draft.
But despite working on it for hours and hours, I wasn't feeling good about anything I had so far. So I spent a couple additional hours trying more new things, trying to capture that magical pop feeling, but I just wasn't feeling it.

The last two weeks have been a very tumultuous time in the United States, and as a result, I've found myself gravitating towards more punk, rock and electronica as an emotional outlet. I realized that this heavier music was what I wanted to recreate for my gig poster instead. I scrapped what I had and started over.

I felt good about what I had going for my draft, but I decided to ask for some feedback anyways. I now felt confident that I would be able to finish out the project the way I wanted. I decided to switch the text around, add some other elements, and play with the color scheme.

Here's my completed poster:
I feel the warped text really gives the poster a more rebellious feel. The font is meant to mimic the Russian alphabet, and the clenched fist in the middle is meant to capture some of the same feelings that Soviet propaganda did so well at creating. These last couple weeks I've been feeling very rebellious, like it's time for another rebellion. I'm pleased with what I was able to make, I only wish I was able to see "The February Connection" live in concert.
