The rapid development of antibiotic resistance is frightening, complex and has an impact on all of us.
A database of the World Health Organisation collects all the information about antibiotic resistance. The database was analysed, reorganised and visualised by connecting the most important information—the six most hazardous and common infections, each linked with the antibiotics used in the past, present and future.
The aim is to raise awareness of the topic and convey the importance of sensitive usage in order to ensure that antibiotic treatments can still save our lives in the future.
Storytelling
The data visualisation is build up step-by-step. The user is given an introduction to the topic and the graphic elements of the graph.
The modified sunburst graph is divided into six pieces—representing six infectious diseases.
The inner circle shows a logarithmic scale of each bacterial infection per year. The outer ring shows the antibiotic timeline, ending in the future. The development of resistance is visualized with a gradient into red. Small red dots illustrate the first time a resistance occurred on that specific antibiotic.
As the timeline reaches the present, only a few antibiotics are left for treatment.
interaction
The user can click on any infection and antibiotic to get more information about death rates and the occurrence of resistance.
