What is the role of the Internet, globalization, and consumerism in identity formation? Where does the given freedom of self-expression take us?
The project aims to criticise pop culture and consumerism in regard to identity fabrication through visual imagery. The collage was created by collecting popular images illustrating synthetic culture as a form of self-expression.
Unlike premodern societies, where identities and scripts of life were to a greater or lesser extent predefined and/or restrained by geographical, spatial, social, family, and religious boundaries.
Nowadays we are freed from said restraints and are ensured with all the freedom of expressing ourselves. However, claimed freedom is fabricated by corporations as “popular culture”, which in fact is a synthetic culture with no authenticity. Following identity formation by means of consumerism.
