Running the Clock

Time is of the Essence
The job consisted of creating a pocket-watch time piece. The client wanted something authentic she could advertise for her growing antique shop. It was to be completed in under two weeks as time was of the essence and the client needed the design out and published as soon as possible.

Since there was such a vigorous time crunch, the client provided two photos from her store that the designer could work from. The first is presented with the second following soon after that.
Sixty Seconds & Counting...
Even though the designer had two referenced photos to design from, it wouldn't be wise to begin a digital draft without first taking about the shapes, shadows and highlights that made up the image. Thus sketching was a little different, instead of sketching various versions of the pocket watch, the designer sketched shapes, the shapes of shadows and highlights.
It was amazing to notice how many little shapes made up the whole pocket watch, how shadows that weren't noticed before, became great shapes in the eyes of the designer. If anything it felt like taking apart the clock was the foundation to actually building the clock.

Time Gone By
Taking a pocket apart and putting it back together, sounds pretty simple. Yet when implemented it got rather hard pretty fast, there the designer first focused on the bigger pieces. Over time, she added the face and tried her hand on the chain links.

When shown to the client, it was decided up that a pocket watch without a chain link was more simpler and much better suited for the overall picture. Thus it was removed and the designer focused on a face on, head on view.
Check The Time
The final draft came out rather nicely, the client was pleased and was able to use it in the advertisement of her store.
Times Up
In conclusion, the goal was set out to complete a pocket watch for the advertisement of a growing antique shop. The shapes of shadows and highlights were seen and sketch out, a few digital drafts were made until a final was completed.
The designer learned the value of shadows and highlights and how much they are apart of a clock or any other object. It's those shadows and highlights that make the depth of the imagery, without it you have an image, without depth, without detail. This was one of the harder designs to be completed but it was one that was the most fun to do. There was just something about watching every line and shape and see how they all came together to complete "time".
