Redesigning Gandhi Chappal | Open Elective 2019

International Open Elective 2019 |
Redesigning Gandhi Chappal
This elective intends to expose the students to the deeper meaning and values embedded in Gandhian design. Extending some of these values, it will encourage the students to recast and redesign contemporary versions of the patti chappal. It will equip the students with the skill of making customized, hand-crafted footwear in naturally processed Ahimsa leather. The elective will be a step towards empowering the local cobblers, and reviving the cottage industry by making well designed, affordable chappals which can be locally produced with limited resources.

utilitarian / jʊˌtɪlɪˈtɛːrɪən // adj
1. designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive.

Concept:
My concept is inspired by Gandhian philosophy of utilitarianism. I intended to reduce the usage of leather in my footwear by substituting them with practical materials like rubberized cork for the footbed and recycled tyre for outsole.
