Rowdy is an independent online and biannual printed magazine that explores concepts through visual arts. Featuring interviews, short fiction, commissioned photography, opinion pieces, fashion editorials, photo essays and more.

Each issue aims to explore a concept from different points of view and creative fields. Rowdy isn't interested in finding answers but to ask questions.

ISSUE III: NEWNESS.

When was the last time you have done something for the very first time?

NEWNESS seems to be the answer to so many hidden memories. You might not quite remember what you had for breakfast this morning or what you did last week, yet have a very acute memory of the first time you rode a bicycle, swam, had a cigarette, sex or Ecstasy. Our ability to remember forms the bases of who we are.

"Our memory is our coherence" wrote the surrealist Spanish-born film-maker, Luis Buñuel, "our reason, our feeling, even our action." Lose your memory and you lose a basic connection with who you are.

And what about when you really want to remember something, saying I will never forget what it feels like to hold a newborn baby. But you do forget, and the memories vanish. What are the ways to keep memories fresh? One could answer to keep the visual recollection of such an event, through the image like painting, photography, or perhaps to capture the smell, feeling or taste.

The quality of being different from other similar things, the fact of not yet being familiar or experienced with something, the quality of being recently created or having started to exist is what we want to focus on and address the issue of newness in arts. Because the artworks are unapologetically intended to subvert often instituted notions of culture and of the role and the form of art: to question the value of all and to unsettle the status quo, much as the interventions of Ai Weiwei, Duchamp or Joseph Beuys achieved.
