The Silver of Hmong—Web & Catalog Design

The Silver of Hmong

Catalog Design / Web Design / Illustration / Type Layout / Photography
This catalog and microsite are introducing the silver art of minority Hmong. The content shows four types of silver jewelries (horns, headdress, pendant, and plates) that Hmong women usually wear during their celebrations and the meanings of the patterns on the jewelries for the locals.

For the book, I designed full-spread illustrations by using the patterns from the silver jewelries and put some photos to show how the jewelries look on women’s clothes (some were taken by me and some were searched online). For the microsite, I applied the illustrations to the webpage, and added dynamic effects to make them move and I also put more images to the site. In addition, the Chinese characters in the layout of both two forms which connect to the patterns’ meanings are no longer text but playing a role of decorating the layout. The whole visual design can get people closer to this culture.
