Portrait photography is one of the popular and also most useful type of photography to learn the basic layouts which is skin tone,eyes,background, depth of field which are always important no matter what type of picture you are trying to take at hand, it all depends on the subject and the photographer at hand. 

But the most basic layout in portrait photography is the skin you want to try and keep natural as possible, even with the eyes in my opinion it is better to keep things all natural while editing every now and then. 

You also have the framing and cropping which is the most important tool within the photography world at hand because if you can work with a frame it might add more emotions to the work piece and if you need to crop try to be careful with how you present it. 

Depth of field can also show how much you understand the world and field of photography at hand because sometimes you will have a clear background or sometimes you will have a blurry background at hand, it can make your piece more better depending on the genre.
