The Alphabet is a Source
The Design
The brief was to create a book of The Alphabet is a Source, a text extract from the The Alps and Pyrenees by Victor Hugo. The theme of my book is travel because Victor Hugo travelled a lot in his life and was travelling through the Alps and Pyrenees when writing this text. I created trails that flow through the book, resembling routes he travelled. By putting the wave in a grid, it allows it to be uniform and the two languages to overlap while being legible.
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, unfortunately I was unable to print the final book. It would have been a concertina book, allowing the full trail of the text to be seen.
Research and Development Work

I researched Victor Hugo’s life which lead me to choosing travel as the theme. My design concept was inspired by my trip to the Baltic where they had leaflets that looked like trails and I decided that a concertina book would be best suited for this. I developed the idea and formed it into grids allowing the two different languages to cross over each other whilst still being legible. I experimented with the letters and colors to enhance the importance parts of the text and distinguish the two languages.
