It’s remarkable how the old tradition of giving a ring as a marriage symbol is still so strong and worldwide preserved.
Even more remarkable is the fact that there is no such a strong universal symbol for the birth of their child.
I imagine a birth symbol as an extension of the ring as marriage symbol. Refined for the needs of our modern
society where less and less couples want to get married and where a new kind of togetherness is growing.

The ritual
A birth symbol involves a ritual that symbolically connects parents with their children and fits within the social changes of today. The symbol consists of three parts: two blades, a joint and one, two, three, four, ... rings, depending on the engagement. The ritual starts when the rings are gaven to each other. When this evolves in expecting a child, the ritual continues. First they connect the blades with the joint to obtain the umbilical scissors. Subsequently, the parents connect their rings to it to make it functional. Now the child can be separated from the mother and is the bond between the parents and the child symbolised.
