Artist’s Statement

My paintings are inspired by the people who take up space in my everyday life. There is a laid back simplicity in my work, and its intention is not to be interpreted as literal by any means. Working with both oil and acrylic paint, I try to orchestrate the subject matter in a way that first captures the figure in the frame, and then find ways to add sentimental objects throughout the composition in a stylized manner. The figures in my paintings are encased in a vibrant atmosphere in the way in which I view the person. What may appear as an everyday household item in my paintings, in fact, holds a much deeper symbolism in my work. They are not for the viewer to understand, but for myself. I aspire to capture what I hold close to me, and that is color, real-life, and empathy.
