BUBBLES AND HERRINGS: A JOURNEY THROUGH A COASTAL TOWN’S HERITAGE

We define ourselves through symbols. They unify us and revive the spirit of our communities. This is what inspired the Traffic Design crew to set on a journey to create a new landmark in our city.

Searching for a right place for an urban art piece, we considered a few districts, but Redłowo won our favour due to its rich history, as well as many changes that have been taking place in the area. During consultations with the residents, we discovered the impact of these changes on their daily lives and uncovered a certain sense of nostalgia. The community members were bringing up neighbourhood stories of joint efforts, like planting trees and even snow removal. The area used to be less populated and as new blocks of flats (many of them fenced, with extensive security systems) were popping up on Redłowo’s map, they started feeling like it became more difficult to get to know each other and cultivate friendly relationships.

That is why the neon took the form of two overlapping fish, passing each other a bubble they are a friendly symbol of collaboration between neighbours. Moreover, there is nothing more Gdynian than a fish, as two herrings and a sword combine into the city’s beloved coat of arms. The neon’s simple form has been derived from the modernist origin and spirit of the city. It is situated on a building towering over a busy junction, creating a memorable landmark.
Next time you’re in Gdynia, pass us a bubble!
