Let the walls do the talking

In 20112018 we hosted a yearly street art festival, humbly titled Traffic Design Festival (the festival continues in the form of a Biennale). Each year we created a new visual identity, corresponding with the Festival’s theme. In 2015 we focused on typography and how it can work as art in downtown Gdynia.

Our Festival was about finding cool places and spaces and giving them a chance to shine. It was a celebration of our city, its unique character and everything that makes it special. This was reflected in the key visual created by our in-house team. The simple image of the letter T (transparent or completely cut out in some cases) was used as a portal to let the city shine through. Clean, simple typography complemented the design, providing additional information.

The use of negative space made it possible for the visual identity to adapt to any background or urban environment. We created posters, booklets, outdoor exhibitions, and ambient advertising using the same design language. The identity also took the form of large-scale, boxy letters placed on city streets  a symbolic reference to the monumental character of modernist architecture. Elements of the key visual were also employed online as well as in the interior of the Festival headquarters.
