Issey X Singapore

Issey Miyake is a fashion designer in Japan known for his 'Pleats Pleats' concept where his fabrics are pleated.  'Pleats Please' has no rules, and it conforms to the wearer's body shape. He has created an entire themed display by using the pleated fabric to form the shapes of some Japanese cuisine.

The concept for this whole project is to showcase the fusion of his famous pleated fabrics in Japan with the Singapore's culture. I've decided to use one of Singapore's most recognizable kueh, Red Tortoise Cake (Ang Ku Kueh) as the main object of the poster. To show the fusion, the Red Tortoise Cake is placed in the middle of the white a2 wood, hence it will make it look like a Japan Flag while at the same time showcasing part of the Singapore's culture in a pleated design.

Process of the Red Tortoise Cake: The red cloth is first soaked into starch water to make it stiff. When it has dried up, pleats are then folded manually and then ironed for it to stay. After that, it is sewn around the edges to make it more secure and not move about. Lastly, the Red Tortoise Cake pattern is then silkscreened on top of the pleated cloth and the sides are folded in to form a round shape.
For my second item, I have decided to use a Japanese Fan as a form of handout to be given to people. The colours of the fan when it is closed shows the colour of another of Singapore's famous Kueh, the Nine-Layered Kueh (Jiu Chen Gao). Just like the poster, it shows the fusion of the Japanese culture (fan) with Singapore's culture (Nine-layered Kueh).
