Week 7: Task 1 - Design Critique
Harpic White and Shine Bleach

For this label, there was on three different typefaces displayed. First, there is the Harpic typeface, then the White & Shine typeface and then the writing on the rest of the bottle as a typeface. The different typefaces work in conjunction with each other as there is the bold typeface for the brand name showing its importance and then smaller less significant typefaces underneath. They all sit in the same family of type and complement each other well. Sizing of the name of the product opposed to the information sizing of the text underneath organises the text for eye-line to start at the top of the bottle and work its way down.

Colouring is a prevalent treatment in this design. The bottle only uses three different colours, so it is aesthetically pleasing and works well to portray the brand effectively. Red, dark blue and light blue make the product effective and not overpower the design. The graphics behind the ‘white & shine’ typeface was effective in its use of enhancement of the wording. Drawing the eye to the text, the graphics represent a sparkle effect of graphic circles and white colouring to represent what the product can do. The shadowing behind the typeface is also effective in making the label pop out without overcrowding the bottle with too many effects.

I believe the design is effective for this product. The design enabled the audience to receive all the information necessary in one look of the bottle. There is no need for the audience to read the bottle for no longer than 10 seconds to understand what this product is and what it does. I believe this is the most effective way to produce a design without reducing the ability to make it aesthetically pleasing.

The organisation of this design is imperative to the efficiency of the product and the aesthetic quality. the organic flow of the label from top to bottom with the use of large sizing of the brand logo at the top then smaller words underneath. The design is not cramped or overcrowded which enables high aesthetics of the design.
