Modelling Process

During the process of modelling this object in Autocad Fusion I changed some of the dimensions of different parts of the model so they all in proportion. The diagrams below show the new measurements.
Early Sketches and Prototype

In these Sketches I was inspired by the form of fingernails and I want to make the point of my design like an abstract fingernail. As this product is being designed for use in densely populated areas the end of the device used for interaction should be self sanitising. So the abstract fingernail at the end of my device should be made out of a self sanitising material like copper. I am also inspired by the way the nerves in the human hand interconnect. I want the top of the design to be flat and angular but I want to try and make each part of it seem interconnected. On the top of the device there will be three led strips that indicate the air quality via their colour. The air quality measurer will sit towards the end of the device so that it gets good airflow. I decided to draw influence for the design of the air filter from the form of human lungs.

After sketching this design I made a prototype for it out of card in order to figure out the exact measurements for the different elements and to make the device perfectly fit my finger. I started by folding card into thin strips and then wrapping them around my hand, making a mark where I thought it fit and then turning the strips into rings. I did this several times until I made two rings that fit my finger perfectly in the desired positions. After modelling this prototype I can see that the air quality measurer needs sit after the second ring so it does not possibly get damaged by the users finger.
In the first project of this course I focused heavily on the juxtaposition of curves and strait lines found in the human form, especially in the human hand. I wanted to expand upon this idea in my second project. I have decided to create a speculative design for this project. My idea is a device that sits on and extends your index finger which contains an air quality monitor.  This device will be designed for a possible future in which safe air is not a constant and knowing whether or not you are in an area with safe air would be extremely useful information. Initially I thought a device like this would only be useful in this scenario. However, after some research I found a device of this nature would also currently be useful in some of the worlds megacities during the winter. I would like the device to theoretically interface with a persons central nervous system so that the device would feel like it is a part of a users body. This would allow more precision and awareness of the object when the end of it is used to interact with world.
