The project ‘Get Out More’ is a response to multiple media articles reporting on the unusually high amount of hours people spend engaged with technology, as opposed to getting out and doing something active. By creating the slogan out of cardboard, I was able to transport the letters to key locations in the UK to obtain people’s opinions at random and encouraged them to write their reactions on the front face of the cardboard letters. Their responses answer the media’s headlines and were subsequently used to created typographic posters. The responses also contributed towards the production of a postcard/book ‘Things I Have Learnt About People’ which contains hand drawn responses and photography of the slogan in the locations.

The letters covered in the collage made from cut triangles to represent the dititgal screen that we all look at. This collage didn't work, it made the letters un readable and didn't stand out.
Experimenting with colour faces on the letters, deciding which colour work and which do not. I decided to go with the three colours Red, fluorescent orange and green. Red was for Wix Young Farmers Club and Thorpe Social Club. Orange was for Colchester institute. Green was for London. I was using the letters as a cultural probe to ask people what it means to them to get out more, they would then write their responses on the letters. This would structure the final major product from the responses.
As I wanted to be able to change the faces of the letter, I used spray mount and lightly sprayed the paper to stick on the letters. This way I could change the colours depending on the next location.

I decided to make a lino cut of #getoutmore, I would then leave these prints in locations in London. The people that found these prints could join in the conversation on Twitter. I uploaded pieces of work with #getoutmore so the public could see what the project was about.
The trolley I used to transport the letters around London.
St. Pauls
It started off really quiet then it picked up and it attracted a lot of attenetion with tourists. The main purpose was to get the words 'get out more' in peoples haed so they thought about getting out more. The fluorescent green stood out really well on the concrete and people.

White Horse - Mark Wallinger
Tower of London

This was a really good location to get responses, people were standing next to it and getting a photo of it with the Tower in the background. It is a shame we got moved on and told we needed written permission.

Even a dog made its mark
I took the letters to Flatford and placed them outside the Haywain made famous by Constable, it seemed right to this because the main focus of this was to get people out more and see different places than looking at a screen.
London and Flatford 'G' responses.
Colchester Institute 'E' responses
Wix Young Farmers Club and Thorope Social Club 'T' responses.

All letter faces were scanned into the computer, this way I could edit the responses and produce a book full of responses. I converted the drawings and written responses to vectors, so I had full control of the sizing.
Inspired by Stefan Sagmeister I decided to create a box full of responses. Each colour represented the location of responses. The box was hand made and cut with the Square font used for the 'Get Out More' it made a nice link overall project.
Once I had gone through all the responses and found the best ones. I crated an a1 poster which I then used to screen print onto fluorescent paper.
Travelling seemed to be one of the main responses on the letters, from all the locations visited. It only seemed right that I made 'Travel The World' out of cardboard in the same font as 'Get Out More'.
Once I had figured out the exhibition wall space I had to work with, I strated to make the letters. Using the same method as the cardboard Great Britain.

Once made, I placed the letters in the same place as the 'Get Out More' was in the snow. The raw state works very well and I decided to leave them un covered, so viewers of the exhibition could see how they were made.
I decided to make a book of all the places I took the letters. The book size was 12x12 inches, a
reasonablesize to show case the images that I had documented.
The posters in situte with the Haywain image.
I decied to use the Haywain photo in a gold frame to give that element of Constable however my piece was more tounge in cheek than anything. The content of the image shows men trying to recreate the famous image Constable painted but it also documented people getting out more and enjoying people outside.
The work was then displayed at D&AD New Blood exhibition
I had to make a cardboard frame, as the wooden frame from the last exhibition was too heavy to hang off the cardboard pannels. The arabic screen print was also used as a mount for the Haywain photograph.
