This is a Character Design that I made for my thesis degree about Cartoon's Golden Age.

At Animation's Golden Age times the toons used to contain many Spiritist and Gothic themes, such as hell, skeletons, evil wizards and of course ghosts.
So I choose to design my character as a ghost in 30's cartoon style.

I thought at my character as a metaphorical ghost of the past, a ghost of the Golden Age Animation's flavor, humor and atmosphere.
So I decided to place the character in an ambient designed too in the old school fashion.
I imagined a classic "haunted castle" with stone walls, chains and spider webs.
It had to be on a soft grey scale, and look kind of like a painting.

And at last I wanted him to be animated and alive: I tried to reproduce the rubber hose animation style, with a really rubbery, malleable body.
To pop out from the background the character needed to be filled in black and white contrast, in the so called "inkblot style".
And finally there it was: my old school Ghosty!
