Meteor Strikes (Information Design Final)

Information Design Final: Meteor Strikes Infographic
Using processing (Java) to parse, code and map out approximately 30,000 lines of data, I was able to create a graphic locating every meteor strike to hit Earth.

All data was provided by my Professor

INSPIRATION
I wanted the graphic to have a sci-fi feel to it while still maintaining good contrast. I was particularly inspired by the aesthetics of The Expanse (TV show), Star Trek as well as architectural hand drawings that use very geometric blocking and typography. I wanted to have a graphic that felt mysterious, and futuristic and gave me the same level of intrigue and excitement as my love for Sci-Fi does.
The Expanse
Star Trek The Next Generation
Star Trek (Modern Movie Series)
Programs Used: Processing (for java), Adobe Illustrator
Processing Work
Final Deliverable
For the final deliverable, I decided to only display quantitative data points from the top ten largest meteor strikes. This provided intrigue for the graphic while minimizing cognitive load. I also made this intentional decision in order to keep the information capsules an appropriate readable size.
Conclusion & Learning Outcomes
This was my first time sorting a large amount of data like this, and it was so much fun to be able to stretch myself and look at such large quantities of information. As a designer it's my job to be able to look through the hard data and create a narrative to display it in a way that's both informative and pleasurable to the end user.
