When she enrolled in Harvard Law School she was one of only nine women in her class. The Dean of the school invited all the female students to dinner one evening and asked them all why they were, “taking the place of a man.” When she became a professor at Rutgers, she was one of less than 20 women law professors in the United States. Upon being hired she was told that she would be paid less because her husband had a well-paying job.

As director of the Women’s Rights Project, she argued six gender discrimination cases before the Supreme Court- winning five. Ruth reminds me that if there’s only one woman in the room, it’s not women that need to change - it’s the system.
