COFFEE CUPS

These cups are made of ceramic, using a production technique called slip casting. Its removable cork grip prevents hand contact with the hot ceramic surface when you’re drinking your coffee. They come in two sizes, the 200ml classic cup and the 80ml espresso.

The cups began by being produced manually in the Lautaro’s workshop. Now the cups are being produced industrially.

The project was born on Instagram and it aimed to be designed based on people's comments. I made surveys through Instagram stories, giving the community the liberty of choosing different morphological and technological alternatives for the cups. Based on the responses, I followed a path and started the production.

The production process starts with the realization of the model and then make the plaster molds. Once the molds are finished, the slip is carried out so that after a certain time the mold is emptied leaving the piece with the desired thickness. The process ends in the oven, where the first baking is done, then the pieces are glazed and they are baked again.

Update August 2020

Six months after the artisanal production, Empire Coffee decided to manufacture the products in China. I made small changes in dimensions, angles, and the cork grip's shape and finish, to improve the user experience.
