"Về nơi có nhiều cánh đồng" - "To where the fields are" is a book project I worked on last year, December 2019. As an art director, I was involved in many stages and sections, from cover design and layout to creating collateral assets for the PR; from graphic design to digital work for its microsite and eDMs.
I am truly grateful to be able to work with such an amazing small team, finally I have found the courage to walk out of my comfort zone of motion graphics to get hands on other areas of design that I have not much exposure to. Obviously there were challenges, thus I am thankful for my team mate at Du But Publisher for their support and advise.
Most of all, it's my honour to work with the young and talented author Le Phan. His unique style, quirky sense of humour and professional attitude towards working never fail to amaze me. He surely has a very bright future ahead.

The concept
The idea for the cover came from my own experience of sending and receiving snail mails. This contributes to the whole main idea of the book: going back to your origins, to the basics, the bare necessity of this life.

I would like to shape the book as if it is a visual journal, a lengthy postcard that you received from where the fields are.
Some first options...
which may be over-romantic and fragile, though I love the freedom of handwritings typeface pairing with the elegant serif.
To the final choice below
we decided to go with the handwritings style, companied by a postage stamp from Têu-y-pot. "Têu-y-pot" in the local ethnic minority language means "that place with many fields".
Layout
Between each chapter, photographs taken along the trip that created this book were inserted.

I suggest styling them into an photo album/scrapbook.
The microsite
A microsite was put together to let readers read the first 2 chapters. It's also used to collect online orders, gather subscriptions, RSVP your spot on book launch night and provide presskit for the media.
I brought the reading experience to readers by having a flipbook plugin on the site that allows users to open, read and flip the page as if they are reading a hard copy.
