Vanitas Photography

I created images with inspiration from 17th century Vanitas photography, translating it into the context of traditional objects and age old everyday items in India. This was an exercise in color theory, where I have followed a complementary color scheme including shades of reds and greens. The image represents a feeling of envy. The green backdrop builds the overall mood, while the objects add onto it. Every object is representational of both the mood and the concept behind the image.
Brass utensils are usually present in the compositions, as they were commonly used for cooking and storing food. Here, is and example of betel nut leaves placed next to its engraved box.
Rice forms a huge part of the diet staple in southern India. Here is a typical delicacy or rather the most basic meal that people of those times had as their meal; a bowl of boiled rice soaked overnight accompanied with roasted dried chilli, salt and onions.
