For this project, our class visited the Detroit Institute of Arts and picked two pieces of art to use as appropriation. We had to pick a vessel to try and recreate as a way of practicing our hand building skills. The vessel I chose was called "Jar in the Form of a Jaguar" and it was created by an unknown artist between the years 1000-1500 in Costa Rica. I was pretty happy with my recreation of this piece because I kept true to the original form, while adding my own style to the Jaguar's head and face. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, I wasn't able to finish glazing and decorating this piece.
This piece was part two of our appropriation assignment. For this piece, I had to combine the vessel I chose in the last piece, as well as a contemporary painting. The vessel I used for inspiration is "Jar in the Form of a Jaguar", created by an unknown artist between the years 1000-1500 in Costa Rica. The painting I used for inspiration is called "Self Portrait II" by Joan Miró in 1938. I decided to recreate the Jaguar head from the last piece, only making it really big this time and more animated. I planned on using the sunflower shapes from Joan Miró's piece to frame the head, and I wanted to use the same colors from that painting to glaze this piece. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, this is where I had to leave off on this creation. Hopefully someday soon I'll be able to finish it!
