Joan of Arc was one of the first women I ever looked up to. As a kid her story resonated with me (plus her armor makes her look badass!) I realized now that loving a girl that wouldn’t conform to gender roles was a hint that I’m not exactly straight. Ha!

In the 4th grade, every student was assigned to make a project about a historical figure. I knew right away I would make a paper doll of Joan. My teacher tried to talk me out of the project because she thought it would be too difficult. But I was convinced. The paper doll was completed with male clothes and leather boots.
The other kids thought my project was weird but I loved it anyways.

My teacher later admitted that the project turned out great and gave me an A. She said she was proud of me for pursuing my idea even though she discouraged me at first. And that’s the lesson I learned from Joan of Arc in the 4th grade- never give up on your vision. Persist.
