I wanted to get dirty with this project. The Mafia is a vile organization and I wanted to show gritty pages with type that reflected the skewed perceptions of a Mobster lifestyle. Whacked aims to draw the reader in with the allure of celebrity Mafioso characters like John Gotti and juxtapose that perceived glory with crime scene images and death toll statistics. Additionally, quotes taken from family of convicted mobsters reveal a loss of innocence and a propensity for the criminal lifestyle. I wanted to create a New Yorker’s brutally honest analysis of the Mafia’s attraction and leave the reader with a sense of the harsh reality that faces any wannabes.
