PLANNING THE EXHIBITION
 SOURCING A SPACE

It’s now the beginning of the end of this Masters journey as all my research has come to a close. This morning I sent the dissertation to the editor so that it now can start to become finalized and ready for printing and submission. My focus is now on the planning of the MFA exhibition.

The process of sourcing an adequate exhibition space commenced began last year in August 2019.  I looked around Durban at multiple venues but ultimately wasn’t happy with the spaces or they were not financially realistic. Originally. I was willing to pay to rent a venue at a small fee however, due to personal circumstances beyond my control this was no longer an option.

I was offered a space to use for free for the exhibition in a space called “Studio 3” in Point road in Durban, this was the space I was considering using. Yet, the galley is in an old Durban building that is in an odd shape with lots of windows, but my main issue was its size, it was too small.  The next venue option was the KZNSA, this gallery has multiple spaces that can be used, I was mainly interested in the media lab. The media lab is a long rectangular space with no windows as its sole purpose is for media art. As soon as I walked into this venue I could visualize my work in the space.  I spoke with the gallery assistant and the following day I had emailed in a proposal to use the space. Following this email, I was sent a price list, the cost to use this venue was completely unaffordable (over R9000.00).

After this I then went to meet with the DUT Art Gallery, this venue is currently under major renovations and with all its new work will be a good space to show. The venue is also digital art compatible and as it is owned by DUT, so I can use the space with no charge.
I meet with the curator and we discussed the exhibition, we walked around and evaluated the space and discussed roughly where artworks could be placed and how they would be hung as well. I booked the space for Mid May 2020.
