I designed covers for the new teen novel series of Pagony, which will consist of many books, each written by a different author. It's about time traveling kids, who team up with historical figures to solve crime, and find out how exactly things went down in the past times. I think this is a great way to get the attention of younger kids, they can easily identify with the main characters, who are also from the present. They can see a historical world through the eyes of a modern child, and find out that the past is actuallly not that different from our present at all.
The theme has allowed me to explore new techniques for the cover artwork. I wanted to combine historical feel with modern setting, that's why I chose a painting-like style with dramatic lighting, combined with progressive, dynamic poses and composition. I wanted to emphasise the controversion / tension between the past and present by colliding it's elements. For example, some of the main characters wear present-time clothing or hold modern objects, so this dissonance is clearly visible for the viewer. The color palette and the technique are the cohesive elements of the illustrations, helping the upcoming covers to fit in the series.
