Frequency: Fitness Center for the Visually Impaired

This project was collected for CIDA.

This was a collaboration project between architects and an interior design students. The goal was to design a fitness center for the visually impaired. For our concept, we chose to focus on the sound and touch senses. From that, we used frequency waves on the outside of the building that translates to the quote, "limited sight does not limit vision". We transformed the frequency waves into a way finding device built by one of the architects, that would be wooden dowels with guitar strings inside, tuned to make noise as you stroke them. The closer you come to a room or a "danger zone", the higher the pitch of the string would be. This device was applied to all perimeter walls within the program. This is how we were able to incorporate the concept of frequency into sound and touch.

We chose to use a color palette that was less likely to be confused by people with color blindness. The red-orange and blue-green are complimentary colors. These specific fabrics were chosen because they create a high contrast for someone who is completely color blind; they would still be able to tell the difference between the colors if seen in black and white.
