Visiting Bali's Tanah Lot and Taman Ayun Temples

David T. Ball is a high-level professional in Dallas, Texas, and a supporter of several Dallas area charities. An avid traveler, David T. Ball has visited a number of countries over the years, such as Abu Dhabi and Bali. During his time in Bali he visited a number of the country's approximately 20,000 temples, including the Tanah Lot and Taman Ayun temples.

The small Tanah Lot temple sits on an unusual rock formation just off the island’s coast, and has become a popular destination for travelers and photographers. The outcropping of rock is near enough to land that visitors can walk there at low tide. The small stone landing is continuously shaped by the surrounding ocean, and in 1980 the Japanese government paid roughly $130 million to have the culturally revered temple (and other historical sites) restored.

Taman Ayun, meanwhile, is one of the country’s most popular temples, among both tourists and locals. Dating back to 1632, Taman Ayun is one of Bali’s six royal temples, and is regarded as both a spiritual and historical site, not to mention an impressive architectural feat demonstrating some of the nation's most complex building techniques. In 2012, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named the temple, known locally as Pura Taman Ayun, a world cultural tourism site.
