First Light Film Festival

Now showcasing - Visionary Japanese Cinema

First Light Film Festival is a contemporary film festival project. FLFF regularly features: new local and international film from all genres. Mainstream crowd-pleasers to groundbreaking art-house experimentations; the return of well-loved classics alongside rare cult gems, with filmmaker guest appearances, interactive workshops and discussion panels, to complete the mix.

A 1950 Post War Japan had become dominated with with American and Western influences. Its business, politics, traditions and arts were falling in line with the “Western World”. It began to lose sight of what Japan was, blurring into the background of the ever-changing world, its global stance began to fade away.

It was the rise of four Japanese directors, with the creation of their visionary films that brought light back into Japanese creative culture, and gave Japan the global recognition that it needed. Thus “First Light” Film festival was born.
The visual identity has been inspired by Japan's cultural situation during this period of time, and from the directors who changed it all. Blurred typography, shapes and subtle blurry nuances that run throughout, emphasise the fading of Japan's identity. The shapes of the festival are inspired by the circle of the Japanese flag, in which signifies the sun. First Light's quarter circle, half circle, and finally full circle, representing the rising and rebirth of Japanese cultures and cinema.
