Description
The Turn of the Screw by Christopher Lavelle is a visual interpretation of his brother's song. It is about a woman unable to come to terms with the loss of love. Throughout the narrative her world is unveiled and she slowly dismantles the machinery of her mind. The video, which is very loosely based on the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, illustrates the mind of a young war widow and her ever loosening grip on reality.

Communication Objective
Lavelle's objective with The Turn of the Screw was to create a visual landscape that would enhance the story of the song, while leaving room for interpretation from the viewer. To assign visuals to a song is no easy task due to the nature of the landscapes created by listeners, each one unique to that listener. Pairing music with video, the viewer is forced into a visual landscape that is not of their own creation. As a result, the visuals must marry the lyrics, sounds and pacing of the song to such an extent that they become one. If the video does not reflect the essence of the song then both fail by association.

Tools used
Adobe Photoshop was used to create the matte paintings and all of the images that required transparency for layering. Adobe After Effects was used for the virtual and live-action sets. Most of it is utilizing the 3d (2.5). Layering transparent elements in 3d space was used to create rich landscapes. Particle systems were used extensively throughout. Adobe Soundbooth and Premier Pro were used for the editing.
