Auszeit
This student project in the area of editorial design was created as a team effort by Mariam Ibrahim and Sarah Hauffe.
Auszeit is a magazine made by designers for designers. Unlike the usual magazine, Auszeit intends to create a unique visual experience. Depending on your own perception of the texts and visuals, your personal experience will differ from ours and those around you. This way, every individual is able to observe and interpret the visual communication of content freely. This first issue deals with the topic of time-outs within the brain.
The magazine consists of two type of texts. One type – the readable one – is inspired by the book Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. Naked Lunch is an elastic book filled with drifts in and out of visions of drugs, sex and medical experiments. In Auszeit we tried visualizing Burroughs’ hard-boiled and creative writing style. The second type of texts are three essays discussing LSD, dreams and pornography, which were mainly inspired by the documentary-series “Explained” and an initiative called “Fight The New Drug”. These essays were distorted to a point of illegibility so they would become part of the visual experience rather than offering plain information. You can find the full essays subsequently to the main magazine.
