Despite outward appearances, cars today are no longer functional, or even mentally stimulating. They are a mere distraction, an escapist fantasy giving the driver a false sense of power and a brand-based sense of identity. Today's cars are just demanding enough to prevent one from carrying on a productive conversation or think for his or herself. Instead, they foster the worst kind of rivalry.
