The 9&50 Freakshow - NCAD Graduate Show

As part of my Bachelor in Fine Art in Textile Art & Artefact, I created a classroom installation derived from the narrative of a freak show. Surrounded by ideals of perfection in modern society, I have become fascinated by the ideals of beauty and how we doubt ourselves. I created a series of characters that are a celebration of the imperfect and challenge our ideals of beauty/ perfection.

The Bearded Lady, Twins of Prey and Not-So-Strong Man are the 3 characters at the center of the show. Each character has a 'flaw' or unique quality that challenges the viewer to think about these expectations society has of us. Using a blend of textile techniques, painting, photography and mix-media, the installation came to life in the form a classroom. 3 desks were lined up with objects placed within the desk for viewers to sit and read. Each desk was hand painted with butterflies, owls and deer to reflect each characters obsessive desires.

Living in fear of Judgement,
Only experiencing Rejection,
Welcome to the Freak Show,
