SPEAKING UP AT A SILENT AUCTION

SPEAKING UP DURING A SILENT AUCTION

One of the largest issues facing the LGBTQ+ community has been to convince the public that appearances can be deceiving. As a society, we're driven by visual information, we make observations and interpretations based on our own experiences and as a result, we sometimes discount how a person may feel internally, simply because we cannot glean that information if it's not given to us.

THE STROOP EFFECT
Even if we've never heard the name, we're all familiar with the phenomenon. The Stroop Effect is the science behind our brains' processing speed. We're most familiar with its use on a simple colour test. The colour of the word doesn't match what's written, like so: RED. We thought this quick mix-up for the brain perfectly demonstrated that sometimes it can take a minute or two to see more than just what's on the surface. With these communities, it's not always how they appear to look on the outside, but how they appear to feel on the inside, and as long as we take a minute to see the visual for what it truly is, that's the first step.

THE IDEA
Members of the LGBTQ+ community can identify or express a gender that differs from the one assigned at birth. Our poster simply took the rainbow flag and applied The Stroop Effect to help illustrate why society might have such a hard time seeing people for who they are.

Be honest, which did you see first?
