Schiphol
Groundbreaking airport design 1967–1975

The new Schiphol airport opened its doors in 1967. Everything was thought out, from the system of runways to the details of the interior and the now world-famous signage. The designers took a good look at the latest developments in aviation and brought them together without compromise. Schiphol became a textbook example of a modern airport. This book describes how a large team of top designers shaped the new Schiphol at the time. Their ideas have determined the atmosphere and quality of Schiphol to this day.

The book is based on a study by SteenhuisMeurs into the core values of Schiphol after the opening in 1967. To make this an attractive public book, Beukers Scholma was asked for both design and image editing. The design of the book is as simple and clear in its design as the relaxing interiors of Kho Liang I, the crystal clear signage of Benno Wissing and the legible buildings of the NACO architect team, Frans de Weger and Marius Duintjer.

The typography in the Akzidenz Grotesk and the yellow color of the two theme sections are derived from the signposting of Wissing and give the book the Schiphol feeling of that time. The grid on which the book was made consists of squares: the basis on which the architecture was made by the architects. Beautiful photos by Jan Versnel, Frits Rotgans and Aerophoto are printed in silver on black paper. The effect of this is that the viewer is extra focused on the architectural qualities.
