Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
a truly impressive and thought provoking monument that represents the enormity of loss with great dignity. the concrete blocks reminded me of grave stones and the deeper you get into the memorial, the higher the blocks get. the ever changing floor levels and block heights really make you feel uncomfortable, unsteady, isolated, even trapped, like getting lost in a labyrinth where you lose your sense of orientation and reality. naturally i was thinking of the Jewish people who were murdered and enslaved ,during and around, WWII, but generally about all who were punished for simply being themselves, during that time (and even in present time). even though we only passed by for a short visit, it was a time for reflection, to acknowledge the mistakes made in our history and to never let something like that ever happen again. it was also a time to reflect on our current politics and to respect why the installations stand.
