Terrace houses are iconic to the inner North Melbourne suburbs of Melbourne. For this project, my client, Barbara mentioned her love for North Melbourne’s authenticity and how the idea for the continuity of a “terrace house” struck out to her. Noticeably, as the need for contemporary lifestyle began to largely accommodate the design styles of homes nowadays, the essence of “terrace houses” was slowly disappearing. In order to revive what the very character of North Melbourne was, I decided to design or rather, re-design a Terrace house for a 21st Century lifestyle. While it would cater to contemporary needs of evolving generations, it would still contain the spirit of terrace houses.

The plan exhibits the use of different elements of a terrace house that are re-interpreted for a contemporary lifestyle such as the simple ironwork that serves as a fence is interpreted vertically on the ground upon entering the building as a poetic gesture and as a play on threshold, various other elements such as corbels, stucco, fireplace, chimney, stained glass and more have been re-interpreted to create quirky elements found through the house.

The decorated steel panel in front of the bi-fold glass door which makes up the second-floor façade is operable as shown in the detail section drawing.
